Carl Jung began as Freud's chosen heir — the crown prince of psychoanalysis, president of the International Psychoanalytic Association — and broke with him around 1913 over the nature of the libido, a rupture that cost him the movement and nearly cost him his reason. Out of the "confrontation with the unconscious" that followed came the whole apparatus of analytical psychology: the collective unconscious, the archetypes, the psychological types, and individuation as the work of a lifetime.
